How do we turn a book into braille?

We translate from printed text to braille. And we make sheet music accessible for musicians with visual impairments.

Of course, we use conversion software, but there are many aspects of a text that require manual work and human attention to detail. Examples include simple things such as hyphenation and paragraph division, but also more complex tasks like constructing tables.

We translate not only from text files, but also from PDF and Excel documents, and we offer these services even if you don’t print with us.

Some Examples

If you would like to see what we have embossed and printed, we have plenty to show. Of course, our portfolio does not look like a typical showcase page from an ordinary printing company. After all, our most important readers have a completely different sense of both form and storytelling than those who read with their eyes.

80–120 words per minute

The reading speed for braille is often 80–120 words per minute. However, experienced braille readers can often reach 200 words per minute – a pace fully comparable to visual reading. And some are in fact twice as fast.

Braille and Opportunities

In 2021, a survey was conducted among 85,000 blind adults in the United States. Of those who could read braille, 90 percent were employed. Among those who could not, the employment rate was only 33 percent. This, if we reduce literacy to a mere economic factor.

What it means on a personal level – to be able to access public information or to enjoy "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" without assistance – can hardly be measured in any known currency.

90 %

Perfect Pitch

For those who are visually impaired, language becomes larger and more important – and so does rhythm. Not everyone is a Stevie Wonder, but studies suggest that up to 30–40 percent of people who are blind from birth have perfect pitch.

Louise Braille, the inventor of braille, was a musician and also developed a system for musical notation that can be interpreted by visually impaired individuals. Other well-known blind musicians and artists include José Feliciano, Ray Charles, Andrea Bocelli, Jeff Healey, Ginny Owens, Clarence Carter, and a long list of blues musicians with the nickname “Blind,” the most famous probably being Blind Lemon Jefferson.
